Part 1

1. Letters and Emails

Do you still write letters nowadays or do you just use email?

Obviously I don’t write letters any more as it is so old-fashioned and takes so long to get the message to others. Besides, I believe fewer and fewer people write letters right now.

Can you tell me some of the major differences between writing letters and email?

Well, one big difference between them I can think of is the speed at which the message is delivered. What I mean by that is the receiver can get your message through email much faster while it will have to take at least a few days for the receiver to get the message.

What sorts of email can make you feel excited?

Well, definitely any email that contains good news can make me excited or even thrilled. For instance, I will be so pleased to receive an email in which I am informed that I am officially admitted to a university I’ve been dreaming to go to.

Do you think that people will stop using letters in the future?

No, I do not think letters will become obsolete in the future, because it brings people a much more intimate and personal feeling when people receive letters from their friends and families, which is something that email cannot do.

Do you prefer to make a phone call or send an email to others?

It really depends on what matter I need to address. For instance, I will have to make a phone call if I need someone’s immediate attention to the matter I work on. Otherwise, I will probably just send an email as it is nothing urgent.

2. Punctuality

How do you remind yourself to be on time?

Well, as for me, what I usually do is to set a time clock in my smartphone for each of my appointments so that I will be reminded with a ring 2 hours earlier before I go for my appointment.

Why do some people tend to be late all the time?

Well, some people seem to be late all the time just because they simply don’t take their appointments seriously, which means they do not have to take any severe consequences for their lateness.

Do you think it is important to be punctual?

Well, yes, it is absolutely crucial to be punctual because not only does it show your respect for other people and their time, but more importantly, it demonstrates your good sense of time management.

What do you normally do when you are waiting for someone?

Well, I generally play with my smartphone while waiting for someone. For instance, I would probably read some latest news, listen to some music or even chat with my friends to kill time.

Do you think people these days are as punctual as they used to be in the past?

Well, I guess probably not.

You know, with so many amazing functions in our smartphones, most people tend to spend so much time either watching movies or play games on it. As a result, they unconsciously lose control of their time, so we end up being late for our appointments.

3. Plant

Do you grow plants at home?

Yes, I do have some plants at my balcony. I have kept them for almost two years.

What plants do you grow?

I’m quite into a kind of plant called succulent. It has thick soft stems, and it varies in different kinds and colours. It’s now a very popular kind of ornamental plant in China.

Do you know anything about growing a plant?

Well, since succulent has thick soft leaves or stems that can hold a lot of liquid, you don’t have to water it very often. I usually water my succulent once a week and it can survive in dry sunny seasons for a long time.

Yes, we will. And we’ll send different kinds of plants on different occasions. For example boys will send roses to their girls on Valentine’s Day, and carnation is a common choice for Mother’s Day.

4. Maps

Do you often use maps?

Well, I think it largely depends on how familiar I am with the place I travel in. I might have to use a map to help me get my destination if I am in a new place. However, a map won’t be so useful when I am in a place where I have lived for a long time.

How often do you use a map?

Well, not quite often. I mean I am a guy who tends to stay at home a lot. However, I may have to refer to a map when I go out to meet my friends for an appointment. For instance, my friends pick a restaurant for dinner, but I have no idea how to get there. In this case, I will rely on a map to show me the simplest way to get to that restaurant in time.

Who taught you to use a map?

Well, if you mean paper maps, I think it is probably my father who did it when I just started learning how to read a map during middle school. However, if you are talking about electronic maps, I guess I learned it myself as it is so easy to learn and use with an app in smartphones.

Do you prefer paper maps or electronic maps?

Obviously, I prefer to use electronic ones as they are so convenient to carry and use compared with paper ones. However, I may have to use a paper map when I go to visit a park as that is what they usually provide for visitors.

Part 2题目1

Describe a time when you feel surprised to meet someone

You should say:

when this happened

who this person was

what did you do together on that day

and explain why you thought it was a surprise to meet this person.

提示:

此话题属于“经历”类话题;其次,我们使用的主要时态应该是“Past Tense”, 描述过去发生过的事;接着,我们看前三个“basic information”:什么时候发生的?这个人是谁?那天你们在一起都做了什么?针对这三点,我们需要思考:它们之间是否存在某种 logical connection?另外,如何针对每个基础信息进行有效的拓展?比如,当我们在拓展信息的时候, 我们是不是可以提及这次偶遇的地方, 在说到这个地方的时候, 是不是顺便可以涉及你们都做了些什么等等;

I remember that was a few years ago when I was alone at a café after work in Shanghai, I accidentally came across an old friend of mine who was actually attending a conference that time. It was indeed such a big surprise to me, because I would never expect to meet him like that.

To briefly say something about this friend, he was first my deskmate after I started middle school. And after that, my deskmate never changed for some reason. That is to say, we were deskmates for three consecutive years during that period. Therefore, we got pretty close and used to do so many things together, such as went swimming on the weekends, went to the library to study for exams and even went travelling during school holidays.

As we were both so surprised to see each other on that day, we decided to sit down at that café and grab some coffee to start catching up on the things we missed out over the past 5 years. Later on, I even called a few more friends of ours to join us. After a few hours of chatting, we went to a fancy restaurant nearby for a wonderful dinner, and not surprisingly, we went to a bar to sing and hang around in the end until midnight.

Well, it was definitely unexpected to meet him because of two main reasons.

The first one is the place where we run into each other. You know, I had actually pictured that we could have met in Tianjin, which is our hometown, as we might go back for holidays, but it was in Shanghai where we met.

Second of all, I was so surprised because we had zero contact since we graduated from middle school, so I thought we had little chance to meet again. What's more, we went to different cities for college, which means it would not be easy for us to meet. Therefore, it was out of my expectation to meet him that day.

Eg:Since it is normally hard to run into someone you are familiar with when travelling in a different city, people usually feel quite surprised.

Part 3题目

Do parents in your country teach kids how to make friends?

Yes, in my country, most traditional parents tend to give their kids lots of tips on how to make friends. And I believe this can be explained by Chinese culture. That is to say, it is a common concept that people are naturally and positively influenced if they hang out a lot with good guys, which means making friends with good people is really essential for one’s personal development. Therefore, parents here in China are keen on teaching kids how to make friends.

People lose touch with their friends with the passage of time, why is that?

Well, people lose contact with their friends due to many different reasons.

It might be because they go to different cities for a new life or a new job, or maybe they move to somewhere else for a better education.

However, the biggest reason, I think is that people's relationship isn't strong and intimate enough. Therefore, they tend to lose contact easily whenever a huge or sudden change happens in their life.

What do you value the most in friendship?

Well, there're many things I value in friendship, such as honesty, understanding as well as respect.

However, I regard understanding as something I value the most because everlasting friendship should be based on mutual understanding, which means friends should compromise and understand each other when conflicts arise between them.

For instance, when two friends cannot reach an agreement on something, what they each should do is to reconsider the problem from their friend’s perspective and then they may reach an agreement that they both agree with.

Do you think it is safe to make friends on line?

I think it could be pretty safe if you're really cautious about your personal information when you chat with some random guy online.

For example, you should never expose your real name, address or phone number to those you meet on line, and never go on a date with anyone that you know on line because it is possible that you are cheated out of money once you develop an intimate relationship with someone you meet on line.

Eg:Any confidential information should not be exposed to outsiders according to the contract.

②cheat sb. out of sth.
